It has become normal in modern gaming to give players multiple options for controlling a game’s performance, including raising or lowering frame rate in order to get smoother gameplay at the cost of some downgraded visuals. However, not all new games feature this option.
That includes upcoming action RPG Avowed from Obsidian Entertainment. Several of the developers spoke to the Iron Lords Podcast about the game in great detail and what players can expect. When asked about the game’s console performance, the developers confirmed they are targeting 30 FPS at the bare minimum. The reason for this is because they wanted to focus more on visuals, stating that “you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames” when playing a single-player action game.
]]>There are video game delays and then there are video games that wander through the desert, searching for any sign of a release date. Avowed looks like the latest game to get hit with a delay—but, for once, it doesn’t seem like that’s a bad thing at all.
In his latest Notepad newsletter for The Verge, Tom Warren reported that Avowed, Obsidian’s new RPG originally scheduled to release this year, is getting pushed to early 2025. Usually, a sudden delay isn’t a great sign—or, even worse, a sign of even more delays to come (cough, Skull and Bones, cough). According to Warren, however, this doesn’t seem to be the case for Avowed. If anything, it’s a delay that gives us hope for the game.
]]>Obsidian Entertainment’s next big open-world RPG Avowed, which is the company’s first title back in the RPG genre since 2019’s The Outer Worlds, will be playable in third-person as well as first-person.
Avowed game director Carrie Patel confirmed during an official Xbox deep dive of the upcoming game that there will be a third-person option alongside a first-person one: “A lot of the footage we’re going to see today is first-person, but we do have a third-person option for players who prefer it.” The game’s official account on Twitter/X confirmed the news as well, with a straightforward message: “Third. Person. Gameplay.”
]]>The upcoming first-person RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed, has seemingly had its release date leaked by none other than Obsidian itself. After showcasing the game at the Xbox Games Showcase yesterday, the studio didn’t announce a release date but apparently leaked it in a follow-up blog post.
The post appeared on Obsidian’s website and blog before being altered. It seemingly confirmed Avowed’s release date as Nov. 12, according to screenshots of the blog taken by Twitter/X user HazzadorGamin on June 10. Avowed recently had its story trailer feature as part of the massive Xbox Games Showcase, which did imply that the game would be launching later this year. But there was no precise date set during the showcase, and it appears the developers initially wanted to include one but changed their minds for whatever reason. The post is still up but, like the showcase, features no concrete release date.
]]>Leading developers at Obsidian have today shed light on the character class and build systems they’ve been working on for the studio’s next first-person RPG, Avowed, with the modern take on abilities marking a shift for the company.
Avowed is apparently looking to shake off its predecessors’ classic (and often complex) cRPG design elements in favor of something more approachable. In an interview with PCGamer, Avowed‘s gameplay directors Carrie Patel and Gabe Paramo lifted the lid on what Obsidian is going for in terms of classes in their upcoming title. With hopes that it will switch things up, the devs suggested Avowed will be a “classless” game that gives players multiple ability trees to level up, quite like what we’ve seen in Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls and Starfield recently.
