Launching in 2020 across three platforms including PC and mobile, Legends of Runeterra is Riot Games’ foray into the digital collectible card game space. Thanks to the likes of Hearthstone and Magic the Gathering: Arena, the digital CCG genre was booming, and Riot wanted in.
LoR was one of several projects in the late 2010s that looked to push the League universe into new genres outside of the MOBA we all know and love. After a reveal in 2019 and a four-month open beta, LoR was officially launched in April 2020 with much fanfare.
]]>Amid a new round of major layoffs at Riot Games, the publisher has also today announced its League of Legends-inspired digital card game Legends of Runeterra will see a “reduction in size and scope” from 2024 onward.
The LoR team was one of several affected by the Riot layoffs that saw around 530 employees let go from the monolith gaming company, which represents around 11 percent of the studio’s global workforce. Alongside the layoffs, the company declared it’s going forward with a focus on its core titles, like VALORANT and League.
]]>Legends of Runeterra is being added to the core League of Legends client in a similar fashion to Teamfight Tactics as Riot Games searches for new ways to reenergize the card game’s player numbers.
The new LOR button appears between the TFT and Worlds hub tabs, though this is only available on Oceanic clients today. Once clicked, the Runeterra-specific client opens over the top of the League program. The hope, Riot said when rolling out the new client test on Nov. 21, is to add extra visibility for the game to “help new and returning players” funnel into the digital card game.
]]>League of Legends team LNG lost 0-3 to T1 in what was one of the most one-sided Worlds playoff series on Nov. 5. The South Korean team didn’t lose a single inner turret or dragon to their Chinese opponent.
In a Reddit thread dated Nov. 6, a League fan gathered data from previous World Championships to determine how the series compared to other historic one-sided stomps.
]]>Game designer Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer of Teamfight Tactics teased today that his evil alter ego planned to disrupt multiple Riot game properties, which included adding a Magic: The Gathering Black Lotus to Legends of Runeterra. And the response from a game designer at Wizards of the Coast was an unexpected one.
Set Nine in TFT, Runeterra Reforged, is one of the best-designed sets in the autobattler’s history. The gameplay options are incredibly detailed, providing multiple lines of play, similar to card games like MTG and LoR.
]]>Joining the Ionia region in the upcoming Legends of Runeterrra expansion, Glory in Navori, Sett is a five-cost nearly indestructible champion who levels up from spending mana.
The Boss is coming to Legends of Runeterra in the upcoming Glory in Navori expansion that is slated to drop on March 29. Sett is a five-cost champion that wants to attack and spend mana within the Ionia region. His support package includes a new Coin spell that refills one mana and can stack while in hand. The Boss himself uses his League of Legends Haymaker (W) ability to protect himself upon attacking with Barrier, while a leveled-up Sett can’t take damage or die upon attacking.
]]>North American Legends of Runeterra servers produced a 170000 error code around 3pm CT today, preventing players from logging in and forcing players who were online to suffer a game loss.
This wasn’t the first 170000 error in LoR or other Riot Games titles, either. The error code typically means the servers are overloaded and players should be able to log back in shortly. It can mean there are ISP issues as well.
]]>Riot Games and Xbox have now officially joined forces. Riot’s extended multiplayer gaming catalog of League of Legends, Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics, and VALORANT is coming to the massively growing Game Pass service, the companies announced today.
Players who connect an active Game Pass account to a Riot account will receive a huge amount of premium rewards and member-only benefits beginning on Monday, Dec. 12. The biggest draw is the free unlocking of the entire roster of characters (champions and agents) for League, VALORANT, and Wild Rift (although Wild Rift benefits won’t be available until January 2023). But it’s noted in the FAQ section of the press release that purchasing champion skins in League or Wild Rift also requires a “separate purchase of the champion.”
]]>Riot Games is slated to release every Legends of Runeterra spoiler from the final Darkin expansion World Ender today, according to Mobalytics.
Spoilers for a new LoR expansion typically start around 10 days prior to its release. But Riot is changing things up for the World Ender expansion. A total of 68 cards are expected to get revealed today. The final Darkin expansion will release one day prior to the Legends of Runeterra World Championship and get showcased at the tournament.
]]>Heading into the Legends of Runeterra 2022 Worlds qualifiers, Riot Games has released a preview of what Patch 3.19 will look like.
Slated to release on Nov. 9, Patch 3.19 contains over 30 Legends of Runeterra buffs and over a dozen nerfs. Patch 3.19 will be the first balance update since the release of the Domination expansion.
