Fortnite: Battle Royale or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds? Gaming’s most divisive question over the past few months has now moved to the mobile platform. Which one should you play? We’re here to help you decide.

PUBG released in the West for both iOS and Android earlier this week, just five days after Fortnite’s limited invites were sent out to iOS players only. Eventually, Fortnite will release to everyone on both iOS and Android.

PUBG reportedly grossed more than $700 million in its first year on the markethttps://dotesports.com/business/news/pubg-grossed-750-million-in-first-year-20666https://dotesports.com/business/news/pubg-grossed-750-million-in-first-year-20666#respondTue, 30 Jan 2018 21:49:09 +0000https://wordpress.dotesports.com/blog/2018/01/30/pubg-grossed-750-million-in-first-year/The esports industry could break $1 billion in value, according to a SuperData report.]]>

Gaming and esports have never been more profitable than they were in 2017, according to a new report by market research firm SuperData.

The industry is now valued at $750 million, and SuperData predicts it will be a $1 billion dollar industry in 2018. The leap this year will have to be considerably bigger than the one between 2016 and 2017, however, as esports was valued at roughly $680 million in 2016. The climb is steep, but with the ever-expanding fanbase of esports, maybe the estimation by SuperData is a realistic one.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Riot Games created its own battle royale game mode? Well, the YouTuber Leader answered that question and more in one short video, showcasing what a PUBG-like game mode would be like inside of League of Legends.

The video itself is full of references and nods to both PUBG and League. The chat shows different League players’ names, as well as references and memes that the League community is known for. And classic weapons and items that are found in PUBG have been swapped out for League items and summoner spells.

ESL gets heavy flak for PUBG Invitational tiebreaker ruleshttps://dotesports.com/pubg/news/pubg-esl-invitational-rules-16898https://dotesports.com/pubg/news/pubg-esl-invitational-rules-16898#respondFri, 25 Aug 2017 11:48:54 +0000https://wordpress.dotesports.com/blog/2017/08/25/pubg-esl-invitational-rules/Viewers were left confused when the prizes were handed down.]]>

There was a long moment of confusion after yesterday’s final game of the Gamescom PUBG Invitational Duo series. When two of Cloud9’s players were rewarded with the silver pan at the winner’s ceremony, the second place, fans and players alike were baffled. The official leaderboard, displayed after the full series, had ranked Turkish duo “Mithrain” and “wtcNN” second. What happened? Quite surprisingly, an open qualifier team won the Duo third person tournament and took home the golden pan—so far so clear. But why were the Turks rewarded with bronze, instead of silver? The Turks tied with Cloud9’s players when it came to the total score, win points, and kill score. But with 27 seconds more on average survival time, the final stat displayed on the board, they were ahead on the ranking after the three-game series.

The fans went crazy, for obvious reasons. Without an explanation given at the time of the winner’s ceremony, many felt the Turkish duo was ripped off their placement unfairly or by accident. Today, ESL clarified their decision—but it made things only worse.

Report: Tencent invests in PUBG developer Blueholehttps://dotesports.com/business/news/tencent-invests-in-pubg-developer-16659https://dotesports.com/business/news/tencent-invests-in-pubg-developer-16659#respondMon, 14 Aug 2017 19:49:34 +0000https://wordpress.dotesports.com/blog/2017/08/14/tencent-invests-in-pubg-developer/China number one.]]>

Chinese internet giant Tencent has apparently invested in Bluehole, the Korean developer behind this summer’s gaming hit PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, according to a report by Jiemian News. Tencent initially wanted to acquire Bluehole altogether, the report states, but the developer turned the offer down. Neither company has made an official announcement. Dot Esports has reached out to Tencent and Bluehole, but did not receive a response by publication time. If the report turns out to be true, Tencent will be closer to dominating the gaming and esports market by adding another popular developer to its already large portfolio in the gaming industry. It’s already the parent company to League of Legends developer Riot Games, holds shares in Activision Blizzard, Epic Games, Supercell, and a multitude of other game studios. To date, PUBG has sold more than five million copies, was watched for more than 60 million hours in July on Twitch alone, and attracted a number of esports powerhouses like TSM, Cloud9, and Team Liquid. At this month’s gamescom event in Germany, ESL will host PUBG’s first esports tournament. The PUBG Invitational will see professional teams as well as popular streamers and content creators battle over a $350,000 prize pool. With Tencent possibly backing the most popular battle royale game to date, PUBG—which is still in early access—is off to a great start indeed. UPDATE 15/08/2017: Bluehole answered to Dot Esports’ request for comment and denied Tencent’s investment. “These reports are not accurate. Tencent didn’t make an investment into Bluehole.”

You can now apply for PUBG custom games access for esports and tournamentshttps://dotesports.com/pubg/news/pubg-custom-games-esports-15923https://dotesports.com/pubg/news/pubg-custom-games-esports-15923#respondSun, 16 Jul 2017 20:00:30 +0000https://wordpress.dotesports.com/the-op/2017/07/16/pubg-custom-games-esports/The two week application process has begun.]]>

The time has come. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now accepting applications for custom games access for esports and tournament play. In the past, only content creators known as PUBG partners were able to gain access to custom games. Now, the door is open for tournament organizers and esports organizations to gain their own access so the community can run events and get the game’s competitive scene started. “We are happy to announce that we are now ready to share with you our plans for opening up the next wave of Custom Game Access (often referred to as CGA),” the announcement said. “We want to continue the creation of exciting and fun community content that you, our players, enjoy watching and playing. As a result, we have outlined some rules surrounding who will be granted access to these features at this time.” The guidelines for application acceptance have minimum requirements, including having a community of 500-plus members, being an official esports organization, or being a tournament organizer/production company. The full list goes on, but it’s standard fare for having permission to run an official tournament in a multiplayer game. With PUBG’s insane popularity on Twitch and in the gaming world right now, it makes sense for esports to come next. TSM announced their four-man squad recently, so don’t be surprised to see other big name esports organizations joining the fray soon. The application process goes from July 15 to July 31, so organizations and organizers should get their requests in as soon as possible. A full list of information can be found on the PUBG forums.

TSM is ready to begin its foray into nascent esports world of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The legendary North American esports organization announced its first team for the game today. Marius “aimPR” Ionita will join Colton “Viss” Visser, Austin “SmaK” Haggett, and Gary “BreaK” Marshall. All of the players on the team are successful PUBG streamers on Twitch. “I’ve spent a bunch of time playing with and against Viss and BreaK in the past, and I look forward to being on the same team with them,” said Ionita in the announcement. “I’m really honored that the prior three members have chosen me to be their fourth. With some hard work and dedication, I’m sure we can rise to the top of PUBG and live up to the TSM name.” The announcement said that Ionita had previously found success in Counter-Strike 1.6, DayZero, and Arma 3, where he won the Battle Royal Season 1 Finals and the Bohemia END GAME Tournament. In the Bohemia tournament, he teamed with his new teammate, BreaK. The future of PUBG as an esport is uncertain right now, but the game is hugely popular on Twitch, where it was the second-most watched game just three months after its release on Steam early access. Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene and the development team at Bluehole Studio have said in the past that esports is not a priority right now, but something they will look into once the game is finished.

Gary “BreaK” Marshall has joined TSM’s competitive PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds roster, according to the team’s announcement yesterday. He’ll be joining Colton “Viss” Visser and Austin “SmaK” Haggett.

BreaK has been streaming PUBG since the spring, when the game really took off—but it’s certainly not the first battle royale shooter that he’s tackled. He started nearly two years ago with Arma 3, and consistently found himself at the top of the leaderboards. After becoming one of the best players in Arma, it wasn’t a shock to any of his fans that he’d quickly dominate PUBG as well.
