Ubisoft has given fans a 2026 release window for the long-awaited Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was initially set to release in 2021. The remake was delayed after poor fan reception to early footage. Thankfully for those same fans, the years of silence are finally over after the June 10 Ubisoft Forward event, and the franchise classic now has a release window and a very small new visual to intrigue prospective players.

On May 10, Evil Empire officially delayed the early access launch of The Rogue Prince of Persia due to Hades 2’s shadow drop on May 6. But today, the studio clarified exactly when it will release the game—and it’s coming soon.

Ubisoft dropped a trailer today with the new release date of The Rogue Prince of Persia. The game’s original launch was scheduled for May 14, but now, the studio will release the roguelite on May 27 in early access on Steam, Evil Empire confirmed today.

After Hades 2 shadow dropped in early access on May 6, The Rogue Prince of Persia developer, Evil Empire, admitted it’s “not prideful enough” to be able to compete with such a title, which is why its delayed PoP until the end of May.

Although the delayed release of Rogue PoP isn’t the best news, fans empathize and praise Evil Empire for its “wise and understandable decision” about delaying the release date, even though the dev is confident in its upcoming roguelite.

Evil Empire, the studio behind The Rogue Prince of Persia, has decided to delay the early access launch of its game due to the recent release of Hades 2, the devs announced today.

The team behind this title said it made this decision because one of the most anticipated games of the year in the same genre launched just before The Rogue Prince of Persia would have also become available. The studio still intends to release its upcoming game in May, but an exact date has not been announced yet.

The developer behind the popular roguelike Dead Cells is currently working on a Prince of Persia title called The Rogue Prince of Persia, according to a report by Insider Gaming. 

The game is the outcome of the discussion between Evil Empire and Ubisoft at the Game Developers Conference in 2019, and it has already been under development for four years.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is introducing Speedrun and Permadeath modes in the first major update next week, marking the start of the post-release roadmap.

Ubisoft announced a 2024 roadmap for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown on March 13, the highlight of which is Speedrun and Permadeath modes coming on March 20 in a free update.

Reviews for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown paint a positive picture overall, but it was recently discovered that one of the game’s characters is voiced by a text-to-speech program.

Reported by IGN, tree spirit Kalux’s voice doesn’t sound like it was recorded by a human, and sounds far more like a text-to-speech or AI program. The voice itself is rather stiff and has unnatural inflections. AI voice acting sadly risks becoming more prevalent, much to the dismay of professional voice actors, but the good news is this character’s voice isn’t permanent.

News of a Metroidvania-style Prince of Persia game truly scared me. The franchise has been left to rot for over a decade, and the Sands of Time Remake is stuck in perpetual development hell, leaving me to reminisce, while Ubisoft regroups—again. 

Thankfully, like a noble warrior, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown swipes all that adversity to one side with a cutting-edge sword strike to put on a clinic of Metroidvania excellence. Not only does The Lost Crown dispense with the pleasantries and formalities of a genre welcome party, but it jumps straight into the action with its own idiosyncratic systems, a stylistic and engaging story, and makes you go, “Oh yeah, Ubisoft makes good games, doesn’t it?”
