By now, you probably know The Witcher 4 is coming and it will feature Ciri as a protagonist, and a true witcher to boot. But there’s a lot of people that don’t think that’s possible, and now I feel like I’m the one going through the Trial of the Grasses.
I was sitting in the crowd at The Game Awards when I realized Ciri was going to be the protagonist in The Witcher 4, and the energy for the reveal was tremendous. And why wouldn’t it be? Ciri is a beloved character, one of the focal points of the masterpiece that is The Witcher 3 and the culmination of its story. Spoiler alert for those of you who still haven’t played it, but one of the best endings you can actually get in the game (and some say the best ending, full stop) is Ciri rescuing the world from an unstoppable force and then slipping away from her imperial responsibilities to become a witcher. The Witcher 4 trailer made good on that ending, showing off an older, hardened Ciri who has picked up a few new tricks of the witcher trade. These include potions that are dangerous for normal humans, as well as cat-like eyes that indicate she’s gone through the witcher mutations which make those potions marginally safer to consume, known as the Trial of the Grasses in the games and Andrzej Sapkowski’s stories.
]]>The Witcher 4 has officially been revealed in an announcement at The Game Awards and a familiar face will be taking the reigns from Geralt of Rivia.
It’s been nine years since Geralt’s last adventure in Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, and fans have been eagerly awaiting news of the next installment in the franchise. Finally, those prayers have been answered in a huge reveal.
]]>Hype can officially start growing for the upcoming Witcher title, as CD Projekt has now shared the title will enter “full production” soon. The studio made “substantial progress” on the title this year, creating space for the hopium to start pouring in.
CD Projekt shared the news and other information regarding their upcoming titles, during a video made for investors highlighting the company’s many successes in the previous fiscal year. The video, posted on YouTube today, said “the Polaris team, working on the next game in The Witcher saga, made substantial progress [this year],” with the company’s chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz saying this long-awaited title will soon exit the pre-production phase. The progress made in the past six months will allow CD Projekt to “take [The Witcher 4] to the full production phase.”
]]>The Witcher 4 (codenamed Polaris) will feature Geralt of Rivia in at least some capacity, according to voice actor Doug Cockle—but he won’t be the main focus of the sequel.
This came from an Aug. 10 YouTube video on the Fall Damage channel. As the conversation veered to the next Witcher game, the voice actor revealed, “Geralt will be a part of the game. We just don’t know how much, and the game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time.”
]]>We know CD Projekt Red is working on another single-player game set in The Witcher universe, but it’s apparently not the only upcoming title in the franchise—a new job listing points to another project.
A job listing at Smart Recruiters indicates the Polish developer is looking for a Senior/Principal combat designer for CDPR’s U.S. studio, The Molasses Flood. The person would be responsible for designing gameplay mechanics in a multiplayer Witcher game.
]]>When CDPR released all-new modding tools for The Witcher 3 in late May, everyone knew big stuff was on the horizon. And, while it took some time, we might have one of the best Witcher 3 mods ever on our hands, allowing us to play as fully custom characters.
The mod, appropriately named “Custom Player Characters,” was uploaded to NexusMods on July 6 alongside a full trailer showcasing its many features. With it, Witcher players can choose any appearance from the game to supplant cranky old Geralt and customize their armor, clothing, and everything in between. For those who wish to ditch the sword-swinging Witcher gameplay, there is even a fully integrated magic combat system with customizable spells and effects.
]]>CD Projekt Red, the publisher-developer of The Witcher and Cyberpunk, plans to increase the cadence of its upcoming major game releases. This means we could see a quicker turnaround time for the projects the Poland-based studio is working on.
This came off the company’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday, May 28, where it talked about its strategy to make upcoming release schedules “less lumpy.” CDPR joint CEO Michał Nowakowski said the company, now with studios across Europe and the U.S., is working on several projects simultaneously.
]]>We just got our first look at Henry Cavill’s replacement as Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher show. Liam Hemsworth takes up the double swords and sports an all too familiar look—one seemingly more focused on portraying Cavill than Geralt himself.
Though what we got today was brief and didn’t feature much acting prowess at all (something which Hemsworth undoubtedly possesses), it felt like Netflix and Hemsworth both tried to do an impression of Cavill’s performance as Geralt. From the movement to the camera angles to one’s inability to distinguish between the two when Hemsworth’s face is obscured, the effort seems to have been pointed at controlling the damage of Cavill’s absence. Still, credit where credit is due—Hemsworth looks fine with the black leather armor, double swords, white hair, and iconic cat eyes.
