The Sea of Thieves community has been dealing with some heinous levels of harassment and threats recently. As a result, the developers have had to promise a new level of commitment to combating these malicious players and the problems that have surfaced.

In a new developer blog, Sea of Thieves production director Drew “Sonicbob” Stevens has acknowledged that there was “an increase in player reports and community discussion on harassment and cheating.” Not only were hackers ruining gameplay experiences for servers, but streamers were also hit with temporary bans that coincided with targeted badgering from individuals in-game.

Earlier this year, Xbox announced that four of their games would be coming to Nintendo and Sony consoles in 2024. One of those games was the multiplayer pirate game Sea of Thieves, which already boasts an incredibly large player base since it released back in 2018.

The game was re-released on April 30 for the PlayStation 5, and since then has proven to be a big hit with that console’s player base as well. The PlayStation Blog posted the most downloaded titles of May 2024, and at the top of both the U.S./Canada and EU charts for PS5 games was Sea of Thieves. An impressive feat, considering it beat out some massively popular titles like Grand Theft Auto V, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, and Helldivers 2.

Just as Sea of Thieves is about to launch on PS5, the game reached a historic milestone of 40 million players, ensuring the seas are filled with excitement and ready to greet new pirates setting sail.

In a blog post on April 17, Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate celebrated this phenomenal achievement. “40 million players across Xbox, Windows 10 and Steam is an amazing milestone to be able to talk about, and of course it wouldn’t have happened without you—our brilliant, positive and welcoming community, who continue to surprise and impress us with your creativity and antics out on the waves,” the post says.

Sea of Thieves developer Rare has laid out its plans for 2024, detailing not just new content and features for season 12, but seasons 13 and 14 as well.

Sea of Thieves season 12 is scheduled to start on April 30, the same day as the game launches on PlayStation 5, so it was naturally the main focus of Rare’s recent 2024 preview event. In a livestream held on March 20, Rare explained how its goal for season 12 is to shake up the meta, which is why, for the first time in Sea of Thieves‘ life-cycle, it’s adding two new weapons.

From March 15 to 18, you can claim four cosmetic items in Sea of Thieves by watching select Twitch Streamers play the game.

According to the official Sea of Thieves website and the official X page, both new and existing players can claim four items through Twitch Drops. The items all belong to the Eastern Winds Ruby set, with players able to earn a Figurehead, Flag, Hull, and Wheel to deck out their ship.bPlayers need to link their Microsoft/Xbox accounts to their Twitch accounts in order to claim the drops.

Earlier this week, Microsoft broke one of its longest-standing personal trends in gaming by making several of its exclusive Xbox titles available to preorder on PlayStation 5, and they’re already making waves on the PlayStation Store.

Those games include Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves, among others, but it should come as no surprise that Sea of Thieves is leading the way as the most-preordered game of not just Xbox’s new wave of transitional, soon-to-be-cross-platform titles, but the entire PlayStation Store according to a report from Windows Central. Just a little under a week since coming to the PS Store, Sea of Thieves—which releases for PS5 on April 30—has taken the top spot as the most-preordered game, surpassing upcoming games like MLB The Show 24 and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
