It wouldn’t be an Esports World Cup without Starcraft 2, with the real-time strategy title hosting 16 world-class players in Riyadh beginning Aug. 14.
Up for grabs: A huge $400,000 USD first-place prize purse—the largest in Starcraft 2 in more than five years—as well as club championship points at the Esports World Cup as players chased victory in Riyadh. Here’s what you need to know about Starcraft 2 at the Esports World Cup: Players, schedule, results, streams, and more.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard has finally gone through, and a report suggests this could mean big things for beloved Blizzard franchises lying dormant like StarCraft.
In an interview from BlizzCon 2023 posted to Bloomberg on Nov. 6 by Jason Schreier, Blizzard CEO Mike Ybarra explained that if someone came to him with the “vision and passion” needed to revitalize StarCraft, he’d “bet on that team,” but that he’s not simply saying “go make a StarCraft game.”

Cloud9 has signed another professional esports player, GuMiho, in an attempt to “dominate a new game”—Starcraft 2. Although it’s a welcome surprise, it would have made more sense 10 years ago, when SC2 was at the height of its popularity.
Usually, when we think of games in esports, we gravitate towards ones like League of Legends, CS:GO, Apex Legends, or even Dota 2. So when C9 announced on Oct. 31 that the org had signed its first-ever Starcraft 2 professional esports player, Koh ‘GuMiho’ Byung-jae, it was surprising and a little confusing.

ESL, the tournament organizer running IEM Katowice, has confirmed that the CS:GO and StarCraft II playoffs will take place this weekend as originally planned, despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The organizer, however, noted that it is “closely monitoring” the situation in Ukraine. “Our current priority is to support the players, the talent, and the staff who may be affected by it,” ESL said in an official statement. The CS:GO and StarCraft II playoffs will be played in the Spodek Arena, where a huge live audience will follow the action starting on Friday and ending on Sunday.

There will be no in-person BlizzCon event later this year, Blizzard Entertainment confirmed today. A “global event” is being planned for early next year instead.
BlizzCon 2020 was postponed and reimagined as BlizzConline earlier this year, so the news is not that much of a surprise to most but still a disappointment to many. But with the COVID-19 pandemic ongoing, the company says it’s still not ready to host an in-person event just yet.

Yun “TaeJa” Young Seo has officially retired from competitive StarCraft II play, his former organization, Team Liquid, announced last night.
This is the second time TaeJa has retired from the pro scene and perhaps the definitive one. The 26-year-old was playing for Liquid in June 2016 when he retired for the first time to fulfill his military duties in South Korea. He was the most decorated StarCraft II player in premier tournaments at that time and came back to Liquid in September 2018 after completing his mandatory military service.
