Not a ton was shown for Borderlands 4 beyond a teaser trailer, which showed what looked like the moon Elpis tearing through the skin and asteroids raining down onto the ground\u2014with a robotic figure then picking up a psycho mask. Lore-hounds will also note Lilith's firehawk emblem in the sky just before Elpis appears, possibly indicating that the scene at the end of Borderlands 3's campaign was Lilith not destroying Elpis and the great vault, but rather phase-shifting it somewhere else in the universe\u2014and likely setting up the events of Borderlands 4. The new entry in the franchise will arrive six years after Borderlands 3, which had a plot and new characters that polarized the fanbase somewhat, so it will be interesting to see what approach the developer goes with for the new title. It's unknown whether the Borderlands 4 announcement was always planned to be revealed at Gamescom, but it certainly arrives at the right time, weeks after the Hollywood movie crashed and burned. The Borderlands film is set for a quick move to streaming platforms at the end of August, though even that may not be enough to claw back the $100m splashed on making the film. Despite the Hollywood fail, Borderlands 4 is one of the biggest announcements from Gamescom's Opening Night Live, and excitement for the next entry in the franchise will continue to rise heading into 2025.
