An EU-NA grudge match to kick things off Before the start of the play-in stage, a best-of-five match designated as the \u201cWorlds Qualification Series\u201d (WQS) will take place between the fourth seeds from the LCS and LEC. In years past, it was possible for EU and NA to send both of its four seeds to Worlds, but moving forward, they\u2019ll have to duke it out ahead of the event with only one of them advancing to the play-in stage of Worlds.\u00a0 The play-in stage goes high-stakes The \u201cgroup stage\u201d portion of the play-in stage will be removed in its entirety and replaced with two converging brackets filled to the brim with best-of-three matches. Eight teams will start in the play-in stage of the event and the top two from the tournament\u2019s initial bracket will advance to the main event of Worlds. In total, 13 international best-of series will be played even before the main event of the World Championship begins.\u00a0 A new type of group stage The biggest change coming to Worlds will be the replacement of its traditional group stage with a new Swiss-style stage. The Swiss stage will feature 16 teams, 14 of which will qualify directly from their regional leagues, and two more that qualify from the Worlds play-in stage.\u00a0 Worlds\u2019 Swiss format will feature five rounds of play where teams who have the same record in the tournament will play against each other. No two teams will play matches against one another when they have differing records in the Swiss stage. For example, only 2-0 teams may play against other 2-0 teams, while teams with 0-2 records can only play against teams with 0-2 records in the third round of the Swiss stage. Once a team reaches three wins in the Swiss stage, they advance to the knockout portion of the tournament. Should a team lose three games in the Swiss stage, they\u2019ll be sent packing.\u00a0 No changes to the knockout stage The knockout stage of Worlds will remain the same for the foreseeable future, with single elimination remaining the standard for the tournament\u2019s final phase. An EU-NA grudge match to kick things off Before the start of the play-in stage, a best-of-five match designated as the \u201cWorlds Qualification Series\u201d (WQS) will take place between the fourth seeds from the LCS and LEC. In years past, it was possible for EU and NA to send both of its four seeds to Worlds, but moving forward, they\u2019ll have to duke it out ahead of the event with only one of them advancing to the play-in stage of Worlds.\u00a0 The play-in stage goes high-stakes The \u201cgroup stage\u201d portion of the play-in stage will be removed in its entirety and replaced with two converging brackets filled to the brim with best-of-three matches. Eight teams will start in the play-in stage of the event and the top two from the tournament\u2019s initial bracket will advance to the main event of Worlds. In total, 13 international best-of series will be played even before the main event of the World Championship begins.\u00a0 A new type of group stage The biggest change coming to Worlds will be the replacement of its traditional group stage with a new Swiss-style stage. The Swiss stage will feature 16 teams, 14 of which will qualify directly from their regional leagues, and two more that qualify from the Worlds play-in stage.\u00a0 Worlds\u2019 Swiss format will feature five rounds of play where teams who have the same record in the tournament will play against each other. No two teams will play matches against one another when they have differing records in the Swiss stage. For example, only 2-0 teams may play against other 2-0 teams, while teams with 0-2 records can only play against teams with 0-2 records in the third round of the Swiss stage. Once a team reaches three wins in the Swiss stage, they advance to the knockout portion of the tournament. Should a team lose three games in the Swiss stage, they\u2019ll be sent packing.\u00a0 No changes to the knockout stage The knockout stage of Worlds will remain the same for the foreseeable future, with single elimination remaining the standard for the tournament\u2019s final phase.
